Different Types of Pool Builders

During what we call in the industry “The Covid Years”, pool materials supply plummeted while the demand for new pool builds skyrocketed.  As a result, there were a lot of start-up builders running new companies out of their home garages that popped up seemingly overnight.  We’re not saying that all of these builders are (or were) bad.  Some could have worked for larger companies building pools for years before they decided to branch out on their own.  In fact, even some of our very own superintendents have done just that in years past!  Our goal here is not to place judgement, but rather to educate you, the consumer, on the risks that could potentially be involved by choosing a less-than-reputable contractor to build your pool.

We get it, we all want the best “bang for our buck”!  However, just like with home building and renovation projects, one of the worst decision-based reasons to hire a less-than-reputable company to do build your pool for you is money. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for good, honest competition, but it pains us to see good folks risk their hard-earned money with pool constructors who have no track record or worse, a bad (but hidden) track record. Selecting the right contractor is crucial for project success.

In today’s blog, we will help you identify different types of builders that are out there, ready and willing to make “your backyard dreams come true”.  Then, in the coming weeks, we will help teach you what “red flags” to watch out for when selecting your builder.  We’ll also address certain shortcuts we’ve seen less-than-reputable builders take efforts to cut corners and costs, resulting in sub-par craftsmanship that leads to costly problems down the road for pool owners.  And then finally, we will also address how reputable builders price their pools, and why.

Types of Pool Builders

Choosing the right pool contractor hinges on thorough research into their credentials, licensing, and insurance to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards. Each type of pool builder offers distinct advantages and considerations, aligning with your specific project needs and preferences.

  • Large National Franchise or Chain Pool Builders: These companies have their ownership and headquarters in other states but operate locally. These companies are typically financially stable and have access to a broad range of resources and materials. However, they may have higher costs due to franchise fees and larger overheads.
  • Local Custom Pool Builders: These locally owned businesses often have dedicated office staff, in-house crews, and subcontractors specializing in unique pool designs. These companies typically offer highly personalized relationships and may have complex project expertise. They also have access to a wide range of materials and technologies.
  • Independent Contractors: These are typically small, owner-operated businesses where the owner may do some or all the work himself along with a helper. They typically offer personalized service with direct interaction with the owner. However, it’s important to note the risks associated with individual contractors who may undertake multiple project phases themselves. Dependence solely on one person can pose risks if they face illness, injury, or scheduling setbacks.
  • “Johnny Six-Pack”: Beware of entities that may not be legitimate companies at all. They are typically unlicensed and uninsured and pose an enormous financial, workmanship, and safety risk to homeowners.
