Pool Renovations: 6 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Plaster

Your pool’s surface isn’t just about looks, it’s what protects the structure of your pool and keeps it comfortable, safe, and easy to maintain.

If your pool is starting to feel rough, look worn, or just doesn’t have that same clean finish it once did, it may be time to consider replastering.

But how do you know for sure?

Let’s walk through the key signs that it’s time for a replaster so you can make the right decision for your pool.

1. Surface Texture Feels Rough

If your plaster feels rough to the touch like sandpaper, it’s one of the biggest red flags.  Over time, plaster wears down and exposes the aggregate underneath, making the surface uncomfortable and even unsafe.

2. Plaster Peeling, Cracking of Flaking

When layers of plaster are starting to come off in different areas, or it’s chipping or cracking, it’s more than just cosmetic.  This is called delaminating, and it means the surface is breaking down and no longer protecting the shell of your pool.

3. Stains That Won’t Go Away

Some stains can be treated by acid washing or other chemical treatments, but others are permanent.  If you’re seeing:

  • Deep discoloration
  • Dark blotchy areas
  • Stains that return after cleaning

…it’s often a sign the paster itself is deteriorating.

4. Gunite Showing Through the Plaster

Seeing patches of dark “concrete” underneath the plaster is a sign the plaster has worn too thin.  If you can actually see the underlying structure of your pool, it’s time.  At that point, the plaster has completely worn away in areas.

5. Frequent Chemical Imbalance

Old plaster becomes more porous, which absorbs chemicals, throws off water balance and increases your maintenance costs.  If your pool is suddenly harder to maintain, the surface may be the reason.

6. It Just Looks Worn Out

Sometimes it’s simple – your pool just doesn’t look like it used to.  Faded color, dul finish and an overall “aged” appearance are common signs it’s time for a refresh.
