Pool Service Tip – Houston, is it time to clean my filter?

How do I know when it is time to clean my filter? The frequency of filter cleans can vary greatly dependant upon the type and size of your pool filter and the bather load (the maximum # of people who can safely swim in your pool at one time) of your pool. Filters that use cartridge media or diatomaceous earth (D.E.) usually need to be cleaned at least bi-annually, while sand filters can go much longer before needing to change out the sand. Both sand & D.E. filters can be backwashed to reduce system pressure and increase water flow, but will still need to be cleaned periodically to remove grease, oils and scale that build up on the elements over time. Generally the best indicator of when the filter needs cleaning is the pressure reading (gauge on top of filter). It is advised to clean or backwash the filter once the pressure reaches 10-15 psi above the “normal” pressure (the pressure on the system when the filters are clean or brand new).  If you backwash your sand or D.E. filter and the pressure rises again within several days, you need to do a full filter cleaning. Remember, there is no magic number for how long you should wait between filter cleans, it is something that is totally relative to your pool.
